What is the Chupacabra?

The Chupacabra is a cryptid creature that was brought to public attention in the mid-1990s. The origin of the creature remains a mystery, although there are certainly many theories that have emerged since the first modern sightings. Despite all these efforts, the creature remains a mystery that disappeared almost as suddenly as it arrived.

Chupacabra, Origins of the myths

There is much debate about the existence of the strange creature and whether its stories were inspired by an undiscovered crypt or a few stray canines suffering from sarcoptic mange. Whatever the doubt, however, there are still too many eyewitness reports to dismiss the attacks as normal. There are many theories as to what may have caused the rise of the Chupacabra legends.

Physical Description

Interestingly, the Chupacabra is known to have multiple descriptions regarding its appearance. These descriptions tend to vary depending on location and time period, but almost always include a description of scaly or spiky skin. Other than these criteria, the rest of the story can be quite varied.

Some chupacabras have been described as bipedal. Other creatures were said to look more like dogs and other canines with a severe case of mange. Some sources even described the creature as similar to a monkey. It is speculated that most of the variation in the description of the creature is caused by fear and confusion among eyewitnesses.

Another fascinating feature of the Chupacabra story is that the creature is said to have a bite that leaves three small puncture marks instead of the expected two puncture patterns that most predators leave behind. This leads most people to believe that the Chupacabra is a unique threat that has not been classified under any of the existing animal species in the world today. Others are skeptical and believe there is a more scientific explanation for the mysterious deaths of the animals and livestock.

The Chupacabra in the modern age

In March 1995, eight sheep were found dead on the island of Puerto Rico, completely drained of blood. There were visible puncture wounds in the chest area, but the bite marks did not match any known animal. Several other animals were reported as victims during this time period, although when the incidents subsided much of the talk about the strange occurrence was forgotten.

Several months later, however, when August arrived, the strange occurrences began again. Reports suggest that at least 150 animals (although there may certainly be more) were killed in the same bizarre manner. Concerns about what might be causing the problem grew rapidly.

Local veterinarians studying some of the reported cases noticed the same three marks that had been observed in the March attacks. There were three marks, each as wide as a drinking straw. In addition, each mark was said to be three to four inches long. Many of those who found their animals dead or came in contact with carcasses later reported that all of the animals appeared to be completely drained of blood.

The creature is given a name and a face

Eventually, the name “Chupacabra” came about to give a name to the creature that was causing so much discomfort and confusion with its attacks. The name literally translates as “goat sucker” and was coined to describe the types of animals that were usually victims of these strange attacks. As was once the case with the werewolf

Sightings after August 1995

Shortly after the August attacks, sightings of the mythical Chupacabra were reported throughout much of South America. However, many of these reports are not as reliable as necessary to confirm evidence of the existence of a new creature. The problem? Much of the new attention given to the growing popularity of this mythical being was probably due to the popular talk show “Christina,” which did a segment on the creature’s strange attacks in March 1996.

Possible Explanations for Chupacabra Attacks

Despite the large number of prank calls claiming to have seen a chupacabra, there were some reports of the creatures that gave important insight into why so many reports kept coming in. Perhaps even more importantly, reports from farmers who believed they had killed a creature also became popular – finally there was tangible evidence to study.

The results of many of the carcasses were disappointing to many pseudoscientists, though enlightening as to how and why the Chupacabra myths had arisen in the first place. It was discovered that none of the carcasses available for study were new life forms. Instead, they were all common predators such as dogs, coyotes and raccoons. The confusion that arose when people mistook these animals for Chupacabra came from a severe case of sarcoptic mange.
